The first interesting detour off the Queens Road is about 20km south of Nadi, along a sealed road that threads its way between barren hills, pine plantations and sugar-cane fields to Momi Bay and the more impressive WWII Momi Guns. From the bunkers, the site of a more recently waged battle – a legal one – is visible.

Construction was well underway on the JW Marriott Fiji Resort and Spa, Fiji’s second overwater bure resort, until work came to a grinding halt in 2006, at which stage Momi Bay briefly became home to a first-class golf course on which no one has ever played. With funding delays now overcome, Marriott expect to open their resort and spa sometime in 2016.
